Tournament Recap

This past weekend’s MBS Coquina beach qualifying tournament was the last opportunity to qualify for the MBS National Championship which will be held at Clearwater Beach, FL on December 10th and 11th!

The tournament was a great success and was completed in its entirety considering the cloudy, windy and sometimes wet weather that persisted right through the weekend. However, this did not stop the teams from playing some exciting and quality beach soccer!

We would like to especially thank the Bradenton Sports Commission, Ford Motor Company, Hydro Flask, Treeumph, Sand Socks (Vincere) and Moorish Orthodontist for their great support of MBS and beach soccer in making it a great weekend……even in spite of the weather!

Tournament Champions

U18 (Male): The U18 male division was won by Greenacres Sand Sharks from Lake Worth, FL coached by Diana Ersoy, they won by a score 6-2 against a very good Kicks team from Royal Palm Beach, FL., coached by Richard Woolcock a great supporter and coach of beach soccer and its development:

  • Champion: Greenacres Sand Sharks ...6
  • Runner Up: Kicks ...2

Women's Open: The Soccer Beaches from Land O’Lakes, FL., who were well coached by Jennifer Craven, secured their invite to Nationals with a convincing win, 5-1 over the Palm Beach Riptide from Palm Beach, FL. The young Riptide team is coached by an MBS loyal….John Solek who not only coaches the team but is also on the MBS referee staff officiating at all our tournaments:

  • Champion: Soccer Beaches ...5
  • Runner Up: Palm Beach Riptide ...1

Men's Open: In the Men’s division it was Futbol 5 from Tampa coached by Tito Trigo who was also able to secure their ticket to Clearwater for Nationals. The final game between Futbol 5 and Leo FC was forfeited by Leo FC just before the kick off as Leo FC only had 4 players of which one (Goalkeeper) had a broken toe! This gave Futbol 5 the championship with a 4-0 forfeit score:

  • Champion: Futbol 5 ...4
  • Runner Up: Leo FC ...0

Over 30 Co-Ed: In a very close final it was player/coach Jamie McGuinness’s Co-Ed Open team, Still Kicking that won a very hard and close final by a score line of 4-3 against a very strong Over 30’s Lakeland United team coached by Mindy Allen who is also a regular starter/player on the team! In this division there was also a local Over 30s team from the Anna Maria Island center who were playing beach soccer for the first time. When asked how they enjoyed it they said “it was a blast….we will be back for more next season!”:

  • Champion: Still Kicking ...4
  • Runner Up: Lakeland United ...3

The 1st and 2nd place teams from our MBS summer qualifying series will automatically qualify for an invitation to Nationals in Clearwater, December 10/11 th. They will also be joined by the teams that have qualified from our MBS affiliates, Soccer In The Sand and the Long Island Roughriders. We look forward to seeing the National Championship grow and hope that this year’s 7th Championship event will add more states represented than the ten states represented at the 2015 MBS National Championships.
